Hello, My name is Dr Ivan Sebalo.
I am a counselling psychologist situated in Prague.
About
I have lived, worked, and studied in the Netherlands and the UK, before coming back to the Czech Republic to offer my services in every area of Psychology.
I work with young people and expats who need to sort themselves out and restore their inner balance.
As a lecturer and an active researcher, I am striving to implement the scientist-practitioner model in practice.
Structure, respect, and research-based are at the core of my approach. Although my methods are founded on the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Existential Therapy, and Schema Therapy, I offer personalised (bespoke) sessions to each client.
Why clients chose me?
Private, In-Person Consultations
All consultations take place face-to-face in a private and secure office setting. This ensures a focused and uninterrupted therapeutic experience. Sessions are offered in both English and Russian, making support accessible in a language the client feels most comfortable with.
Individualised, Goal-Oriented Approach
Each client’s needs and goals are addressed with care and flexibility. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all method, sessions are tailored to support personal development, coping strategies, and values, ensuring the therapeutic process aligns closely with what matters most to the individual.
International Experience & Cultural Sensitivity
Extensive international experience brings a deep understanding of cultural identity, migration, and adjustment processes. This background supports work with individuals facing cultural transitions, identity dilemmas, or integration challenges, while fostering an inclusive and respectful therapeutic environment.
Diverse Professional Background
With experience in mental health research since 2017 and university teaching since 2018, the practice is built on both academic and practical expertise. Previous work in an NHS psychiatric hospital provides additional insight into mental health support across different settings and populations.
Professional, Respectful Environment
Therapy is offered in a space that prioritises psychological safety, professionalism, and mutual respect. Clients are met with openness, without judgement or assumptions, allowing for honest dialogue and meaningful self-reflection.
Scientist–Practitioner Model
The counselling process is guided by current psychological research and ethical standards. With an academic focus on mental health in young adults, the methods used are evidence-based, effective, and continuously informed by both research and real-world application.
Areas of Psychological Counselling and Therapy
001
Anxiety and Depression
Persistent worry, tension, low mood, or lack of motivation can interfere with daily functioning and quality of life. These experiences may not meet the criteria for a clinical diagnosis but can still feel overwhelming. Support is available to manage such emotional states and to develop healthier coping strategies.
Cultural and adjustment issues
002
Adapting to a new cultural environment or navigating between cultural identities can bring feelings of isolation, confusion, or internal conflict. Individuals may struggle with belonging, shifting values, or balancing cultural expectations. Guidance can help ease this transition and foster a stronger sense of identity and stability.
Burnout
003
Emotional exhaustion, detachment, and reduced motivation are common signs of burnout, often experienced in academic, professional, or caregiving roles. Burnout may develop gradually and affect overall wellbeing. Addressing burnout involves exploring underlying causes, re-establishing boundaries, and creating space for recovery.
Emotion regulation issues
004
Some individuals may experience intense emotions that feel difficult to manage, or find it hard to express emotions constructively. This can affect relationships, self-confidence, and decision making. Developing better awareness and strategies can lead to more balanced emotional experiences.
Stress and coping strategies
005
Prolonged or repeated stress can impact health, performance, and relationships. Common signs include irritability, sleep difficulties, or feeling overwhelmed. Learning and applying effective coping strategies can improve resilience and reduce the impact of stressors.
Change implementation
006
Making lasting personal or behavioural changes whether related to habits, lifestyle, or mindset—can be difficult, even when change is desired. Many people encounter inner resistance, fear of failure, or confusion about where to start. Structured psychological support can assist in identifying obstacles and building momentum.
Existential dread or crisis
007
Questions about life purpose, personal direction, or meaning can arise during major life transitions or periods of reflection. These concerns may lead to feelings of emptiness, anxiety, or disconnection. Exploring such themes in a supportive setting can help clarify values and restore a sense of purpose.
Self-esteem difficulties, Self and professional development
008
Low self-worth, self-criticism, or uncertainty about one’s abilities can hinder both personal satisfaction and professional growth. Individuals may struggle with confidence, assertiveness, or setting healthy boundaries. Psychological support can facilitate a deeper understanding of these patterns and encourage development and self-trust.
